Dear friends,

Happy Summer, officially!

In July and August, we will follow the season’s invitation to slow down a bit, to rest, reflect, and reclaim a wider perspective. We’ll keep on rocking on Sunday mornings—exploring scripture together, sharing in Holy Communion, and making new meaning and art out in the presence of our loving, liberating, and life-giving God. But some of our regular programs will be taking a hiatus until after Labor Day: This Little Light, Sunday Circle, Bible Study.

This summer pace will give us more time for reflection on the feedback we’re receiving and to discern where the Holy Spirit is guiding us next. It will also be a time to prepare to formally launch three new partnerships and to cultivate a new ecosystem of creative, mission-aligned initiatives in our space, 7 days a week. (Read more below!)

Personally, I’m also looking forward to a bit more bandwidth to learn more about things that have caught my curiosity recently—and to soak up these holy, haggard days with Meg, Judy, and our baby Wren.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to our ongoing Community Check-In. Your voice matters; your vision for this community matters: PLEASE share your thoughts through this online survey. Write as little or as much as you want! Our leadership team will be carefully weighing these responses as we take our next faithful steps, especially as we look ahead to the fall and beyond.

As I wrote earlier this week in a larger announcement, we are thrilled to announce three new partnerships that are grounded in our shared values of creativity, solidarity, and integrity. Come September, All Saints Church will become the new home of the Sunnyside Literacy Lab (founded by Anna Young, left), Citation Needed Press (led by Ari Wolff and Cristina Ferrigno, center), and Parenting Style playgroups (led by Janice Chou, on the right). You can learn more about our dream of an emerging ecosystem of mission-aligned initiatives here.

Registration is open for Sunnyside Literacy Labs’ fall programming, and for Print + Build, the Tuesday/Thursday art classes that Citation Needed will be running at the church for kids K-5.

The whole evening was a beautiful example of creativity within a sacred tradition—very much what we are trying to practice ourselves! Eager for more inspiring interfaith collaborations with Malini, and with neighbors we don’t even know yet…

Looking for ways to protect this community from ICE?

The neighborhood ICE Watch “Office Hours” meets every Saturday from 2-3 pm in the sanctuary. This is a great way to get connected to the work of protecting our neighbors and building power. All are welcome.

Cristina Ferrigno
Tabula Rasa

Cristina Ferrigno is a Colombian-born, Brooklyn-raised artist based in Sunnyside. Her work explores cultural “in-betweenness” as a transnational adoptee through combined-media practices and ongoing community-based projects. She loves all kinds of prints and printmaking, photography and image-making processes, as well as working with personal and visual archives.

This work grew out of experiments using leftover paper pulp from an intergenerational workshop she led in the church garden in August 2025. This lovely, messy, hot event was an epic collaboration between the Episcopal Mission in Sunnyside and Citation Needed, a community-based press and workshop series where Cristina has served as Studio Director since 2025. So this work invites the question…

What's something you’re working on that feels like a soggy, smelly mess?

Here is a tender response we’ve received this week:

My parenting. As my child grows, I need to grow too, but I feel like I can’t keep pace. So I’m in this awkward moment where my habitual responses aren’t quite right, but I’m also unskilled at the new strategies I think would feel right… So I’m stuck in between and nothing is satisfying.
